Showcasing one of New York City’s most dramatic waterfront transformations

Hudson River Park

Hudson River Park homepage featuring Pier 26: New Yorkers have just gained 100,000+ square feet of spectacular waterfront open space. Sit back, swing, play and discover our riverfront’s native ecology.

Hudson River Park runs four miles along Manhattan’s west side, attracting over 17 million visits each year.

What We Did

We designed and built a new mobile-first website that streamlines and modernizes content, integrates park branding into the website design, and better serves park visitors while showcasing HRPK as one of the top parks in NYC.

Goals

With this relaunch, the Park wanted to increase awareness of the Park’s diverse experiences, events, activities, attractions and environmental mission. HRPK wanted the new website to help boost engagement with the Park through volunteer registrations, membership signups and donations. In addition to these goals, the Client also wanted to convey “friendly professionalism” while remaining fun and enticing, reinforcing a concept that makes this place unique — many piers, one park.

Challenges

The old site was no longer meeting the Park’s needs; it wasn’t flexible enough to accommodate the growing popularity of the Park’s events and it did not communicate effectively about all the exciting waterfront transformation projects that were underway. A big challenge was addressing the communication gaps of the general public when it came to the massive transformation projects and the piers within the Park. A flexible, block-based homepage, enables the staff to easily create fresh features on the homepage and they can move and prioritize content to reflect up-to-the-minute events and happenings at the Park. We also created an interactive map that allows visitors to explore all the great things the park has to offer in each of Manhattan’s west side neighborhoods it serves.

Results

To better showcase the Park’s incredible growth, we created a structured, flexible site that showcases design projects in progress and completed at the Park. The “Piers and Places” section of the site aggregates all of these dynamic open spaces in one place, highlighting available activities and amenities. Our mobile first/responsive solution works well across all screens and devices.

Hudson River Park Pier 26: This 2.5-acre ecologically-themed pier in Tribeca incorporates indigenous plants evocative of Manhattan’s ecosystem prior to human development. A short habitat walk leads visitors through five native ecological zones: woodland forest, coastal grassland, maritime scrub, rocky tidal zone, and of course the Hudson River. A sunning lawn and a sports play area make Pier 26 – already popular with the Downtown Boathouse (New York’s busiest non-motorized boathouse) and City Vineyard – a place to please everyone.
